As always with
any updates to any OS, make a clone of your working system before you upgrade. Then, if you get any nasty surprises from any software you can revert back to your working system.
Even though most developers are warning against upgrading to Catalina just yet, there are reports on user forums that most software (not 32-bit apps, obvs) is working fine. YMMV.
Personally, unless you really want the new bells and whistles of updating an OS, if you have a working system then stick with that and certainly don't upgrade anything mid-project.
