Hello paulmmartin and welcome to the forum.
The T-RackS 3 ("TR3") and T-RackS 5 ("TR5") plug-ins are different plug-ins as far as your DAW is concerned. So no automatic replacement will occur.
It sounds like you do not have T-RackS 3 installed.
You might try this:
-- install T-RackS 3 - the standalone program and plug-ins can exist alongside TR5,
-- load a project and insert the TR5-equivalent plug-in next to each TR3 plug-in,
-- set the TR5 plug-in to the same settings as in the TR3 plug-in,
-- repeat for each TR3 plug-in,
-- remove all the TR3 plug-ins from the project,
-- save the project with a slightly different name,
-- repeat for each project.
Make sure that the TR3 and TR5 versions of each project sound as you want. If not then nudge the TR5 project. When you are happy you can uninstall TR3; you can always reinstall it later.

Notes:
(a) The project files for some DAWs are editable; it might be enough to find the TR3 plug=in names and change them to the TR5 equivalents.
(b) If there are load of controls to set, you could try this (I am not 100% sure that it works):
-- save the TR3 plug-in's state as a preset.
-- find it on disk (in ...Documents\IK Multimedia\T-RackS 3\Presets\.. here)
-- copy it to the equivalent TR5 folder,
-- and rename it to have a .tr5m file extension,
-- load that preset into the TR5 plug-in.
(c) Make a good back-up copy of all the projects using TR3, just in case.
