intruments not showing in Sample Tank 3 SE

Hi Sampletankers,

I have had a HDD crash and restored the backup but since then my ST 3SE does not display any instruments, not stand-alone and not under Reaper. I have tried directing ST to the appropriate directory and tried a rescan (the circle arrow) under "Settings" but no instrument apears. So I reinstalled the instruments via "Install SampleTank 3 SE Sound Content.exe". Now the sounds actually appeared in the Instrument window but I cant get them in a Part by double clickin on it.
This is where I ran out of ideas.


Hope someone has a solution,

C:\Users\Desktop PC\Desktop\IRIG IK Multimedia\SampleTank 3 SE\Instruments (the pathe where ST searches, see next answer) but there is a ‘/’ and more text witch I cannot read because the error popup is too small. Should I try to reinstall the instruments in a folder in the root of C:? Should give shorter perhaps even readable paths in the error popup.
I have tried reinstallingf sounds and adding .PAK files, so perhaps at one time I added the Grand Piano 1 SE to the ‘instruments’ folder

1205 a lot of duplicates due to the reinstalls I have tried. I was planning to remove them as soon as I resolved the problem, should I remove the duplicates fist?

there is a sapmles folder in:
C:\Users\Desktop PC\Desktop\IRIG IK Multimedia\SampleTank 3 SE
And in:
C:\Users\Desktop PC\Desktop\IRIG IK Multimedia\SampleTank 3 SE\Instruments

In the Sample Tank 3 SE/ there are none
In the 'Sample Tank 3 SE/Instruments/samples' there are 6. And guess what? These actually work!
We are getting somewhere. How do I proceed? Reinstall everything in the In the
'Sample Tank 3 SE/Instruments/samples folder?'

In the ST3 Browser, the triangular arrows pointing down or to the right are just buttons for collapsing / expanding the tree of instruments.


The first "Grand Piano 1 SE" (in bold font) is the name of the branch in the Browser. The second "Grand Piano 1 SE" is the instrument itself. You'll see that I have some others too.

In ST3, the Disk Path should be "C:\Users\Desktop PC\Desktop\IRIG IK Multimedia\SampleTank 3 SE", that is the top-level one. And that folder should contain the "instruments" and "Samples" folders each with loads of files in them.

The path: C:\Users\Desktop PC\Desktop\IRIG IK Multimedia\SampleTank 3 SE is quite long but I would stick with it for the moment. It can be changed later.

For me the "Samples" folder should be in the same folder as "Instruments"; in your case that would be:
C:\Users\Desktop PC\Desktop\IRIG IK Multimedia\SampleTank 3 SE\Samples
but you have said that that folder is empty.

If you're feeling brave you could try this:
(a) make sure that you have all the Sounds Library download files somewhere safe,
(b) MOVE the files from "Sample Tank 3 SE/Instruments/samples" into "Sample Tank 3 SE/Samples",
(c) Start ST3 standalone program and set the Disk Path to:
"C:\Users\Desktop PC\Desktop\IRIG IK Multimedia\SampleTank 3 SE"
(d) rebuild the cache database (click the circular arrow at the bottom of the Browser),
(e) check that the (6?) instruments load and play OK.

Then report back. (I'm off to watch the 6 Nations Rugby on TV soon.)

I felt brave and baldly tried your (a-e) copy trick but now there are on instruments visible anymore. Ill try to restore to where only 6 instrument where visible. I will let you know when i'm done.

Not quite, it involves England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy (and Guinness).

Have a look at the Sample Tank 3 SE/Instruments folder and sub-folders. Are there various instrument-definition files (.st3i file extension) in there?

Here is what I see in Explorer for ST3 for the piano:

In my "C:\Users\Desktop PC\Desktop\IRIG IK Multimedia\SampleTank 3 SE\Instruments\07__Piano\001__Grand Piano 1 SE" folder I indeed see a "001__Grand Piano 1 SE.st3i" file along with some folders like "Effect Presets" and "Samples".
In the "C:\Users\Desktop PC\Desktop\IRIG IK Multimedia\Samples\07__Piano" I only see folders like "001__Grand Piano 1 SE" but no .PAK files.So here's something wrong.
I tried to enclose a picture but did not succeed.
Is there on the IKforum a post where is exolained what needs to be in which folder?

Nope, there isn't. but from what you have said as there are no .pak files in ...Samples\07__Piano folder then the instrument will not load.

It sounds as though the multiple installs / multiple folder selection are the cause. I hesitate to give any more advice as it may only confuse the issue. I think a clean install of the library from scratch is your best option.

Thanks for all the help and advice. I have been in contact with IKmultimedia support but their advice is alway: "do a clean reinstall of sampletank." Not like your try to move the .PAK files to the samples folder wich I see as a much more simple solution. Once I get to understand the directory structure of ST 3 SE.
I will try playing with with the Samples and Instruments folders.
For instance: on exploring my C: drive I have an Instrument "Piano". Under witch resides a ""001_Grand Piano 1 SE and a "Y_Jazz Upright Piano Eco" folder. This is the same structure that I see when I expand in ST the instrument “07_Piano”
So in the "Sample Tank 3/SE/instruments/07_piano should folder be a 001_Grand Piano 1 SE" folder representing an extendable branch (folder) where the "001_Grand Piano 1 SE.ST3I" file must be.
In the "Sample Tank 3 SE/Samples" should be the same folder structure where the underscore of "07_Piano" is changed to a space: "07 piano"?
When I set the Disk Path in ST to “Sample Tank 3 SE” no instruments are shown. When I set the Disk Path to “Sample Tank 3 SE/Instruments” under “Instruments’ in the ST browserappears a branch “Imported Instruments” appears wit hno instruments visible when I click it.
Can you tell me what folders and *.PAK and *.ST3I shoukd be where? I think the problem lies in the fact that there are “Samples” and “Instruments” directories in the “\IRIG IK Multimedia” folder and in \IRIG IK Multimedia\SampleTank 3 SE and also in “\IRIG IK Multimedia\SampleTank 3 SE\Instruments”. Can you tell me where the *.PAK and*.ST3I should be.
If this does not solve it for me i'll go for the Support ticket and try a Guinness while thinking of a Darkstar drinking Guinness.

I agree with Support - do a clean install. More and more it seems that the various installs have put the files all over the place. Untangling it would be "problematic".
