Sampletank 4 loads slowly!

Postby samplemaniac » Fri Mar 08, 2019 2:51 pm

ST4 loading quite slowly, for example, Black LP keyswitch preset (very big file,7,1 Gb)
loads over or almost one minute!

I know that I have only 1 Tb Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm hard disk for my
sample files (Kontakt, Independence Pro, Structure, ST4),
surely it loads from SSD much faster! 8-)

The full keyswitch guitars do take quite a while, especially the Red Strat, which takes over a minute on my IMac and consumes about 6GB, which also includes my host DAW, Studio One 4. They sound great though... but that is my experience as well.

The nice thing is there are smaller versions without the full instrument if your project doesn't require the full instrument.

The smaller instruments, like some of the woodwinds and synthesizers, etc., load in seconds for me.

Thanks- Dave

The Red Strat KS takes about 11 seconds on my fast PC with an SSD. Memory footprint (standalone) is about 5.5 gig - which is in line with what you are seeing.

The C7 Grand Classical piano takes 2 seconds. So, It looks like the Strat is large. A minute is a long time, though.

I added an SSD drive about six months ago, for various sampled instrument libraries. It looks like almost a necessity these days....

Just wondering - is there an Antivirus doing background scans on the files are they are loaded? If so, then perhaps you can exclude the ST4 library folder from those checks.

It is being loaded from a hard disk. My next IMac will have SSD.

I have Samsung 850 EVO 256 Gb (SATA3) for OS disk and programs
with abpout 100 Gb empty space left.

Would It be reasonable to transfer 75Gb Sampletank 4 (I have only ST4 Standard)
to SSD OS disk?
Loading faster but then leaving only 25 Gb empty space left for SSD.

You don't say if you are on macOS or Windows, but either way you'll be on the cusp of running into potential problems. The general best practice rule of thumb is around 10-20%, to allow space for swap filing and defragmentation. YMMV.

It's Windows 10 OS !

So it would be better to buy at least quite cheap Kingston A400 240Gb SATA3 SSD disk ?
How much faster this would be than hard disk ?

It is SATA3 - my motherboard M.2 is too small (256G) for sample storage!

No idea I'm afraid. I'm sure it'll be faster though :D
