iRig2 makes an awful squealing sound

I'm trying out my iRig 2 for the first time. When I plug my headphones in and turn it on, there is an awful squealing sound. I can turn down the volume on that, but then when I play guitar through it, the guitar is so quiet I can barely hear it.

Is this what the iRig is supposed to do, or am I missing something?

Are you using earbuds with a built-in microphone?

Thanks. I was using the earbuds with the mic. I switched to other ones and the squealing noise went away.

I notice if you play a loop or the drum machine, whatever effects you have on the guitar are also applied to that. Is there any way around that?

Due to the way analog interfaces like iRig 2 which plug into the headphone jack work, you may experience some crosstalk as elaborated in this FAQ https://www.ikmultimedia.com/faq/?id=902

No, digital interfaces like iRig HD 2 will not have this kind of issue.

Excellent. I think I'll return the analog and get the digital one.
