Downloaded BlueBoard updater will not run

Postby docmathoc » Sun Jun 01, 2025 7:52 pm

Long story short - I've tried all methods to allow the downloaded blueboard (old usb version) updater to run on Windows 10 (current updated).
Windows will not allow it to run. It is not 'blocked' (where you can unblock it in properties).
The iRig Firmware updater for my iRig HD2 downloaded, ran and worked just fine.

What is wrong with this blueboard download?
I'm presuming that it's too old for a recent windows 10, but trying to run it in compatibility mode does not help either.

Yes, I am running as administrator. After windows says 'These files can't be opened' an error notification pops up (non windows UI, so presumably from the updater program): 'Error This program needs administrative priveleges to run correctly'.

Anyone else having this issue?

I don't know what would cause that but while you wait for other users to chime in, I would suggest opening a ticket with IK Support via https://www.ikmultimedia.com/contact-support/hw for direct and official technical support if you have not already done so.

Ticket submitted, yes. Since it was the weekend I thought someone here might knwo sooner.
It's very frustrating as I consider myself rather an expert on this sort of thing. I'll post here when it's solved, or not.

Yes, I have the same issue. Also as noted on another post the Blueboard has stopped connecting since the latest IOS App update. So I can't update the firmware to see if that is the issue.

I'm having the same problem - iOS update, and suddenly I can't connect to the blueboard anymore. Tried downloading the Blueboard firmware updater and I get the message that my internet security settings prevent the file from being opened, and then a message that I need Administrative privileges to run correctly.

I have a gig tonight, and I really need my blueboard!

Ok, I have some progress.

IK Multimedia support contacted me, and suggested I copy the Firmware updater to a thumb drive and run it from there.

To my absolute shock, that worked! The app launched and I could at least see the app running.

However, it still doesn't work for me. This is what I did:
    - I powered on the BB holding the "D" key and the "D" key was flashing
    - I ran the updater as administrator
    - I clicked Search and it found a device to update
    - I clicked Update, and after a while it said "Update failed".
    - I tried with a number of different USB cables, same result.
    - I tried a different computer (I have a couple of Windows 10 machines), and on the second computer a windows file explorer window kept popping up labelled "Blueboard" with a .txt file and a default.cfg file.

I found that there were log files created on my thumb drive, so that's hopeful.

But, I also noticed that a windows explorer window kept opening up, like the BlueBoard acted like a USB drive, but it was connecting/disconnecting all the time.

Maybe this helps others - at least get the program running. Maybe my problem is the USB-micro USB cable? Or my Blueboard connector is dodgy, who knows?

Thanks for posting that update. I actually managed exactly the same. I dug out an old Win 10 computer and ran the app from the flash drive with the same result. You can hear the new device sound happening regularly, like it finds the device, then loses it again and again. I tried a few cables as well, thinking that might be the issue, but if you have the same as me, I am thinking that's not it.

I couldn't see anything meaningful in the log file either. But hoping there may be someone out there that can provide a solution.

Success!

After emailing support and getting essentially the same response, I dug deep into the pile of old bits and pieces that I have, and found a windows 7 laptop. Surprisingly it still booted, so I copied the firmware updater onto it, ran it, connected the blueboard, held down the "D" key while I turned it on, clicked Search, and then update.

After a disconcerting number of bings and bongs as it connected and disconnected from windows, and a rather long wait for the progress bar to complete, I finally got a green "Completed" message.

Turned off the blueboard, put the batteries back in and turned in on, and lo and behold, the "A" light flashes briefly (to indicate that it's operating in native mode) and I'm back in business.

For the record, here was the last email I received from support:

Connect the Blueboard, check Windows Explorer it should appear as a removable drive.

When you can, try the following and let us know your results. These steps should help get this Firmware updated for you.

1. Go into the Windows Task Manager on the Services tab.
2. Click on the "Services" or "Open Services" button.
3. Right click on the "Windows Search" service and stop it (if it's running).
4. Right click on the "Windows Search" service again and click on "Properties".
5. As "Startup Type" select "Disabled" (take note of the original setting so you can restore it later). Make sure that the service is now disabled and stopped.
6. Right click on the updater executable and run it as administrator.
7. Turn on your BlueBoard while holding down the "D" pad and proceed normally with the update. An explorer window might open and close repeatedly when connecting the BlueBoard and during the update, do not click inside it.
8. If the update succeeded and the BlueBoard works, go back to Services and restore the original setting for "Startup Type".

It appears that the firmware updater doesn't work on Windows 10, no matter what options you try. I'd try running it on an older machine, or maybe use a VM like VirtualBox or VMWare Player to get a Windows 7/8 environment.

Regards
Paul.

Thanks for that tip Paul. I managed to find an old Win 7 computer to fire up and the upgrade process finally worked on this one, just like you found. Appreciate the help, as it has now solved the issue of the Blueboard not connecting to my iPad. Seems the original firmware does not work with the latest update of the App. I'll update my support ticket so that IK support can guide others. Would be helpful if there was a newer version of the firmware updater though!
