Usability Issue with Tonex Pedal Software Interface

Postby ericbuchel » Tue Nov 19, 2024 6:31 pm

Dear IK Multimedia Support Team, I am writing to bring your attention to a significant usability issue with the Tonex pedal and its accompanying software that is severely impacting the user experience. When the Tonex pedal is connected via USB in interface mode, it is currently impossible to:

Hear the pure output of the pedal
Craft tones without unwanted tone blending
Accurately monitor the pedal's actual sound

The current software design forces users to always have an amp/tone selected, which:

Prevents accurate tone crafting
Introduces unwanted sound blending
Makes it difficult to prepare tones for live performance

Requested Feature:
I strongly recommend implementing a "bypass" or "no preset" option in the Tonex software that allows users to:

Hear only the direct output of the pedal
Craft tones without interference
Accurately monitor the pedal's native sound

This is a critical feature for musicians who rely on precise tone management and live performance preparation. I hope you will consider this feedback and work on a software update to address these limitations. Sincerely,

Eric Buchel

Re: Critical Usability Issue with Tonex Pedal Software Inter

I want to be able to prepare tones for live.
I would like to use the Tonex pedal in "Interface mode" so what I can get the exact sound of the pedal and modify tones for live use using the standalone application for Tonex without DAW. Problem is the librarian is always blending the tone from the pedal with a tone pre-selected from the librarian menu. is there any way to only hear the sound from the pedal? some times i think i got a great tone - turn turns out i had two amps blending which make it impossible for me to fine tune models this way..

How else are we supposed to fine tweak the tones?
Am i doing anything wrong? Is there a guide i should follow?

Perhaps i need a guide on how to "Fine tune tone models and transfer them to pedal for live use so they sound the same as on the computer"

I'm asking A.I and it says

"Disable the pedal's onboard preset:

On the pedal, press the preset button so it flashes, indicating it's bypassed1

This ensures you're only hearing the sound from the Tonex software'

"If you choose not to disable the pedal's onboard preset while using the Tonex pedal in interface mode connected via USB, the following will occur:

Sound Blending: You will hear a mix of both the preset selected on the pedal and the preset selected in the Tonex software. This can lead to an unintended combination of tones, which might not accurately represent either preset individually2

.
Potential Confusion: This blending can make it challenging to discern which effects or tones are coming from the pedal and which are from the software, complicating tone crafting and adjustments.
Inconsistent Live Sound: If your goal is to replicate the exact sound from the software on your pedal for live use, this blending could result in discrepancies between what you hear during setup and what is output during a performance.

To manage this situation effectively:

Monitor Carefully: Be aware that you are hearing a combination of sounds. Adjust your expectations and settings accordingly.
Test Separately: After crafting your tone in the software, test it separately on the pedal in live mode to ensure it sounds as expected without blending.
Use for Layering: If you find a creative use for layering tones from both sources, you can experiment with this setup for unique soundscapes.

However, for precise tone crafting and accurate transfer to live settings, it's generally recommended to bypass the pedal's onboard preset when using it as an interface with the Tonex software."

Ill try a few things and update if it worked or not - in case anyone else is having a similar issue.

Haven't tried it yet but A.I probably found the solution. About to try it.

1. Put Tonex pedal in interface mode, Dual mode.
Guitar> Tonex pedal > USB > PC> Tonex Software (no daw)

2. Sound comes out of a diff sound card / Speakers (dont monitor on pedal w headphones or speakers)

3. In the TONEX software select TONEX as your audio interface and input 2 (dry signal) as main input

4. Play/shape tones using the software. save then upload them using the librarian to your pedal.

Then compare using "Live" mode in DAW to make sure they sound good enough for live..

Am i getting this right? Did i miss anything?

I hope someone from IK see's the complexity of this situation and takes a note to simplify the procedure in the next update :)

Having tested this i can tell you that it WORKS!!

It also lets you play to youtube music and allows you to fine tune your tones which IK told me was not possible without a DAW and interface.

The issue with using a DAW and interface is that the sound would change depending on the preamps you have on the interface/ not giving your the purest tones.

Here are the steps i followed for others having the same issue/ wanting to craft tones and play to youtube music to fine tune their live setup.

Guitar> Tonex pedal > USB > PC> Tonex Software (no daw)

2. [EDITED] Use TONEX as main interface, connect headphones or computer speakers with adaptor to the Headphone jack on the pedal to get this to work,

3. In the TONEX software select TONEX as your audio interface and input 2 (dry signal) as main input

4. Play/shape tones using the software. save then upload them using the librarian to your pedal.
