ashamedly noob question om MTM

Postby Bozothenutter1 » Fri Aug 13, 2021 9:52 am

how the *&^%#! do I use the combo input on the MTM?

the manual just shows XLR and 1/4" plugs.
I can see how the 1/4"plug goes in, but how about the supplied XLR?
I can see the pins and how it works for both (I think) but to mee it looks like the black plastic insert needs to be removed or something?

feeling really stupid right now........

Hello Bozothenutter1 and welcome to the forums.

The combo input is designed to take either a 1/4" jack or 3-pin XLR plug. There are no inserts that need removal.

If you take a closer look at the combo input, you will see three pin holes around the outside of the jacket socket - this is where the 3-pins of the XLR will fit.

Hope that helps.

thanks for answering...I have a penchant for making things fit where they shouldn't.
any idea why they include male plugs instead of female?

Because it’s the plug you need to connect into the socket of the MTM. As I said, there are the holes for the pins of an xlr plug as part of the combi.

If you orientate the male xlr correctly it will fit into the speaker.

Ok, so the easiest way to think about audio signal is that the pins of an XLR ‘point’ in the direction of the signal flow.

Your image shows two of the same thing - XLR sockets waiting to receive an XLR plug (the pins). Try not to think of it in context of mic cable as that’s only one of the things that XLR can do.

You need an output from your interface/mixer/whatever to terminate in a XLR plug (the pin end). This will fit in the socket on the back of the MTM. Just try it, I promise you it fits.

No worries, it's a common question! The combo input on the MTM is designed to accept both 1/4" plugs and XLR connectors without removing any parts. The XLR connector fits directly into the center of the combo jack, aligning the pins with the corresponding holes. Simply push the XLR in until it clicks into place. The black plastic insert doesn't need to be removed; it's part of the design to accommodate both types of connections. You're not stupid—it's just a matter of getting familiar with the equipment!
