Big problem with Axe I/O and Mac OS Big Sur With Garageband

Postby phenix992 » Sun Dec 06, 2020 6:33 pm

hello
I have some problems with

Mac OS big sur
Axe i/O (last update)
Garage band (last update)

1) Too much distortion
Problems : I must set the master volume on - 30 db or more to have a decent sound

if not, there is an horrible sound with a lot of distortion for the drums and all the music
When I used my previous sound card, I had never had this problem
2) Sometimes I must unplug to sound card because some YouTube videos (and other) freeze
(impossible to set up the volume and to play the video)

3) The free softwares
how many softwares do we have with Axe I/o? no Modo drums,
no Lurssen Mastering Console ?
No mod bass?

4) The problems with AmpliTube : error when I wanted to have the presets
it is impossible to have them

Maybe some users have these problems too
I wrote some emails to IK multimedia
no answers now

IK Multimedia's official stance is they don't support macOS Big Sur at this time.

https://cgi.ikmultimedia.com/ikforum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=25885

This was the same stance that they had with MacOS Catalina when it first came out as well. Both versions of the MacOS had huge changes, Catalina being exclusively 64 bit and stringent software signing requirements from Apple and Big Sur support for the new Apple M1 chipset that some of the new MacBooks have.

That said, I upgraded to MacOS Catalina and macOS Big Sur the day they were released. I write my own MacOS applications, so I know I the risks and accept them.

I have an AXE I/O and I'm using Studio One 5 on macOS Big Sur, and so far the AXE I/O control panel software and IK Multimedia plugins are working as expected in Studio One 5. I've made a couple of test recordings without the distortion you mentioned.

The AXE I/O is a class compliant device on MacOS and requires no external drivers. Please make sure you are not using ASIO4ALL or any other external drivers. I'll be recording quite a bit this month, so I'll post back if I find anything unexpected.

I want to acknowledge IK Multimedia's stance on macOS Big Sur and say that I agree and understand their stance. I don't recommend upgrading, but I'm an OS "pioneer" and I trouble shoot and develop/fix software for a living, so I personally accept the risk.

ok thanks !

For ex, TextEdit has one problem with the delete key

But about axe I/o

I really don't understand why I must set the master volume on -30 db (something like that)
because of too much distortion
and not on 0 db like I did with my Line 6 ux2 for almost 10 years (ok I had not OS Big Sur but high Sierra last time and no problem during all the years except from the soundcard or computer itself because of the 10 years)

or if it is my sound card itself
or an Y cable from the speakers to the sound card I can change like someone told me

of if I must buy professional active speakers like for every home studio

My AXE I/O is set to zero without any distortion at all. That sounds like a driver issue. Can you verify that you are not using an external driver like ASIO4ALL?

I had a POD UX1 for many years. The AXE I/O is in a different league as far as quality.

the uX2 was not good with the years
i had to disconnect the cable to turn the unit on
(several times)
i had to do the same thing because of hum

now, I have a brand new and superior sound card

i have not the asio4all
Mac does not need that

i have a midi guitar for garageband (software ): is it a problem ?

I tried to play without my external hard drive : it may be better with a brand new track with the drums only

I wrote 2-3 times to IK M : I am waiting for their answers or maybe I should send the unit -box back to the shop
