TONEX Capture - only hearing clean DI when capturing

Hello - first time posting here, long time lurker.

I have the tonex capture box and a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 that I'm using for capturing my amps and pedals. I have it setup as follows.

TONEX Capture To Amp -> Amp -> Two Notes Torpedo Captor 8 (Line out) -> Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Input 2 (set to line level), Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Output L (1) -> TONEX Capture Line Input.

I also have my guitar plugged into the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 on Input 1 (Instrument level).

End result are good captures that capture my tone pretty closely.

When I play my guitar in step 1 to preview the sound I only hear the clean direct tone from my guitar - it is not routing out to my amp and back in. This means I am playing a little bit of a guessing games and solely relying on my level meters to make sure I'm getting a good signal (instead of hearing it).

I also have the issue that once the model training is done, I can't switch between model and real rig - it just doesn't let me... I'm in the middle of an advanced training run and can provide screenshots of the TONEX software capture setup once that is done, but, I have it setup as

Return from rig: Input 2
Guitar: Input 1
Send to rig: Output 1

Any help or suggestions would be awesome.

Hey, I’m glad to see that you have made more progress than I have. I have tried a focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and 4i4 and have issues getting the software to send the capture stimulus to the interface. Could you please share the capture settings in the send/receive diagram in step 3 (Setup)?

Sure thing. This is a screenshot of my setup. Hope it helps you out.


Also go in your focusrite's settings and make sure Device > Send Direct Monitor mix to loopback is NOT checked. And then make sure to disable direct monitoring.

Awesome! Glad I was able to help. I should mention my issue is with my PC. I don’t remember if the Mac version had the same issue, but I think it did. I ended up switching to my PC for captures because TONEX will use my NVIDIA GPU and goes exponentially faster because of it.

The capture finished and I started the model creation. It was really slow so I let it run overnight. Apparently the TONEX app crashed overnight because it wasn’t open in the morning. I will try again when I get home from work. FWIW I have a PC too, but it’s old.

Ah that sucks man. That has happened to me before too though. No joke, upgrade your GPU if you can. My PC is on the older side but has a 4070 and it cranks through the captures now.

Solved - sort of...

After some digging, looks like the tonex capture process requires three outputs on the audio interface. The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 only has two outputs. Tonex appears to be talking with the ASIO drive (I assume) to pull a count of outputs, it then removes the option to set the output path to one's monitors and the reamp box.

In my case, I am running a silent capture through my torpedo captor X, which happens to have a headphone output. I plugged my headphones in there and now I can at least hear the tones being sent to the amp and adjust levels accordingly.

I decided to order a new interface. Going to try out the audient ID14 MKII. Hope this helps someone.
