I just bought a Tonex One and out of the box it sounded amazing but a few days later the quality seems much worse (lower fidelity, especially with distortion). I’ve tried everything I can think of (input trim, gain, global volume, model volume, confirmed cabinet is enabled, and recovery process with reloaded presets). I’ve contacted IK support but I also wanted to reach out to the wisdom of the crowd to see if anyone can help. All the details are below:
The Tonex One I received had a bad registration code so I initially only had access to the default presets. I was really pleasantly surprised with great sounds when I first tried it out. I tried connecting to my laptop to use as an interface but for some reason I was unable to access preset browsing mode in the Tonex One after doing this (presumably related to the pedal not being registered). IK support sent me a new registration code and I thought all was good but after updating the firmware, I feel like the sound quality went downhill. I’ve tried adjusting every parameter I can think of and performing a recovery and reinstalling the presets but I still feel like the sound is off.
I had been trying out the free Tonex software (CS) with an old iRig HD and an old computer (2014 MacBook Air) and I was underwhelmed by the sound but I decided to order the pedal based good reviews and YouTube videos. I thought my antiquated setup might be degrading the sound quality. I was really blown away with the improvement I was initially hearing from the pedal but my current experience is more similar to my original setup. Using the Tonex one as an interface with a newer computer (M1 iMac) doesn’t sound any better than the pedal.
A few last details, I’m using a PRS 594 SE (relatively low output humbuckers) and listening through Sennheiser HD-280 pro headphones. I have tried another pair of headphones to take that out of the equation.
I’ll take any suggestions for other things I should try.
