Designating Preset Location

Postby russellfincher » Wed Feb 23, 2022 6:14 pm

I'm trying to share my custom preset library between two Windows computers by syncing through Dropbox. Trying to avoid having to manually move files between folders every time I want to switch computers. Amplitube doesn't seem to recognize shortcut folders so the only way to do this would be to change the path that Amplitube looks for presets and have it look in a Dropbox folder. Yes I've read this FAQ: https://www.ikmultimedia.com/faq/index.php?id=1413.

So how can I specify where Amplitube looks for presets?

There was a configurable alternative location in AT4 but it is not present in AT5 as far as I can see. However, it is possible to use a registry hack (usual health warnings apply) to achieve this. My example applies to Windows 10. In regedit, create a string value key called PresetPath in Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\IK Multimedia\AmpliTube 5 and set the new key to the full location that you want to use. For example, mine is E:\IK Multimedia\AmpliTube 5\Presets. Then copy your existing presets file structure to the new location.

Be aware that even when you have done this, AT5 will still write its presets.db to the original location, and I have not found any way to prevent this. I do not understand your proposed usage well enough to predict whether this will create or solve an issue for you!

Also be aware that I got into this as a result of trying to work around AT5's inability to work properly with OneDrive, so how you will get on via DropBox is another unknown.

If you decide to do this, post your results, please, for the greater understanding of all(!)
