Measurable difference in model behavior in app vs on pedal

Postby michaelapk » Thu Aug 08, 2024 3:09 am

I've spent a lot of time trying to get the app and pedal to match so that I can edit presets in the app and transfer to the pedal for use in my pedal signal chain. I've tried calibrating my interface using a signal generator and find a definite difference in how the models operate on the pedal vs in the app. This is all to compensate for the fact that there isn't yet an editor available and I find it awkward tweaking on the pedal itself.

Interested in whether there is an explanation for this or if this represents a bug in the pedal firmware.

Here's the situation: Signal source is a Sine wave generator going through an ABY pedal with A going into my pedal chain (HXFX with Tonex in the FX loop and output to a line level input on my MOTU 4 interface. B goes to a mic/instr level input on the interface.

I've used a VST db meter app to measure the inputs from each channel.

Model being used on both the app and pedal is the Tonex EQ flat with all settings at baseline.

Protocol: bypass all the Tonex model on the pedal and adjust the output of the signal source to give me level of -30 db (which is roughly what my Strat delivers if I connect it directly). I adjust the gain/trim on the B input so that the output of the app with the model bypassed is exactly the same (-30 db).

Here is the part that makes no sense: when I activate the model in the app, it doesn't change the signal level by more than 0.1-0.2 db - as expected. However, when I activate the identical model on the pedal, the level drops by ~ 2.5 db. The difference is discernable by ear which I believe is one reason why the app doesn't mimic the pedal sound. If I turn the output on the app down by -2.5 db, they sound pretty much identical but of course if I turn the models off on both pedal and app, then I hear the difference in the raw signals. As far as I can imagine, that 2.5 db jump shouldn't happen when putting a flat EQ model in with no gain.

I've seen similar behavior with all of the other models I've tried although the delta between app and pedal varies with the tone model/preset which makes it hard to use a constant adjustment to the App output if I want to edit in app and expect similar sound on pedal.

All of this is to compensate for a lack of editor. Seems like there should be a way to at least get identical behavior or models between the app and the pedal. It could be helpful for IK to provide a "calibration model" of some sort that is a totally transparent passthrough.

Interested in people's thoughts or IK's explanation.

Thanks.

I applaud the extent of your efforts. I think it's ridiculous that you can't edit things properly in the software while plugged into the ToneX One. As far as I can tell you can just drag and drop things. Is that correct?
