Can I move the MyDocuments\IK folder?

Postby HowlingUlf » Mon Dec 21, 2020 11:23 pm

Hi!
This folder:
C:\Users\<user>\Documents\IK Multimedia
is almost 8GB on my system disk.
Can I move it by right clicking and chose move to a better place?
Can I delete it.

The modern day Documents folder is such a mess of garbage developers are too lazy to figure out a proper place for. IK Multimedias folder is by far the largest and contains installers and whatnot?!!? The other 25 companies' folder are 750MB COMBINED and IK's is 8GB. Why?

Move? No, some software relies on it, and the installers will have created shortcuts to that folder.
Move some contents? Maybe. It depends on what is in it.
Delete? No.

For info, mine here is 76 MB

I think we're getting somewhere! 8-)

For some reason it's the IK Product Manager folder at that same location that takes up the lion share of the space, and the rest is comparable to yours. It seems that the downloads have landed there instead of on another disk where I thought they would be? :o
Don't ask!
I just saw Amplitube 5.0.1 is released so I downloaded it and it landed where I prefer it to land so I have no idea. Looking inside the folders the A5 folders look identical apart from version numbers. I guess I can move the large files to their proper place and see if the universe comes crashing down on me. Then I can move them back if necessary.

Anyways, thanks! 8-)

Check out the IK Product Manager ("IKPM") user manual.

You can select the destination folder for all downloads. And, when you install a Sounds Library you can select "Install to" to put the library where you want it.

Go to your Product Manager - Preferences - Downloads Folder (save libs here)
Then click to More options in the Sounds tab and install the lib to another location
Moving that dir is not an option after you installed the library

^^^
That is not correct. Sounds libraries can be moved after they have been installed. There is no need to download them again.

Hey Darkstar!

Can you point me to a video showing how to move IK sound libraries to an external drive? I’m using a Mac.

Thanks!

sorry, i do not know of (have not looked for) any videos on moving the libraries.

But several posts in the forum do cover it; including:
https://cgi.ikmultimedia.com/ikforum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=30506&p=131788
https://cgi.ikmultimedia.com/ikforum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=30402&p=131371

And this FAQ shows the folder hierarchy:

Thank you!

Maybe someone at IKM can do a couple of videos- one for Mac and one for Windows.
Or better yet, add a “Move” option in the IKM Program Manager

While I think it's an awesome piece of software, I feel really disappointed about the inability to move its data to a different location. As someone who likes to keep things organized and follow my own folder structure, this limitation is a real bummer.

I mean, come on, for a product that costs $299, you'd expect a bit more flexibility, right? I get that software development is complex, but it seems like a basic feature that should be there.

Don't get me wrong, I still love what Amplitube MAX can do, but this file system restriction is making me question my purchase. However, in the meantime, I'll create a symbolic link, and try to hide it from my Documents folder.

Besides I can't believe I got nothing additional from my purchase, while others have been given Tonex and a bunch of stuff for free :/.

I am a big ST user, and I have been able to move my content data to another dive volume just fine. But yes, I think the IK stuff will still be looking for other data under C:\ProgramFiles e.t.c. Its sort of same for other products. Even under Kontakt, you can move content, but NI will still be looking for their own application files under default user space settings.

That's really a pain. I don't want the IK Multimedia in my Documents folder. I tried to make a symlink but Amplitube 5 crashes.
There should be an option for a custom folder location like in Product Manager.

I only move SampleTank content folder. I don't move the actual application data itself. I am fairly sure you can't even run things like Microsoft Office properly by putting it on a external drive and making shortcuts. But I don't know, never tried. What little I know about Windows OS is, some applications just expect to use your %APPDATA%, %CommonProgramFiles% and %LOCALAPPDATA% in your C:\ drive and will not work off external drives. YMMV.
