I am just getting started with music production and I am trying to decide on my first major purchase. Should I buy a MIDI keyboard or an audio interface first?

That depends on your needs.

I`m a guitarist and it would be impossible for me to record the guitar without the audio interface. I use software to generate my backing tracks.

If you play the piano/keyboard, you will definitely benefit from a MIDI keyboard controller.

If you are a singer, you need the audio interface to record your singing.
