New versions of plugins crashing DAW/Host software

Postby twasaudio0 » Sun Nov 17, 2024 8:51 am

I am noticing the newer versions of the plugins with the new preset window are crashing multiple DAWs and VST hosts on a Windows 11 machine. Let me explain.

Reaper 7.27, Studio One 7, Mixbus 10, etc, load the plugins just fine, but when trying to adjust a parameter or selecting to load a preset where the new window pops open, the DAWs immediately crash. I notice this with all of the TRackS 6 and the new ToneX versions. TR5 and the previous version of ToneX do/did not crash the DAWs.

The Daws/Hosts that I have that do not crash with exception of Cakewalk by Bandlab have a strange ghost image that appears when closing the pop out preset window until the plugin itself is closed. This is happening with Luna and Live Professor and appears to be the way the plugin accesses Windows graphic resources as it affects the desktop and/or any open window that was behind the pop out window.

Cakwalk by Bandlab is the only DAW/host I have not noticed any issues so far.

I do have other DAW/Host software I have not tested, but I want to see if anyone else has issues.

I did send a support request to IK Multimedia so I hope that between this thread and my support ticket they become aware of these issues.

BTW, Amplitube 5 still works fine with all of the above, but I noticed it does not use the new pop out preset selection, so I am under the impression that when IK introduced this new format they messed up something with the way the plugins access graphical resources.

Update - After rebooting my PC it appears that the TrackS 6 plugins load fine and allow for parameter control without crashing MixBus10, StudioOne 7, Reaper 7.27 and Luna.

However, the ghost image for the new preset pop out window still exists in MixBus, Reaper, and Luna and actually does not close until the last of the open plugin windows is closed.

Interestingly this does not appear to be the case with Studio One.

ToneX v 1.8.0 appears to work in standalone just fine and the VST 3 version is now working after the reboot.

What I don't understand is why none of my UAD, Slate Digital, Waves, SSL, and other major manufacturer plugins had issues the entire time the new IK Multimedia ones did. There is definately something different in the way the graphics and/or VST 3 resources are implemented for Windows versions.

Not sure if Studio One does something different in their VST hosting process as now it appears to be fine, and for that matter Cakewalk by Bandlab that never appeared to have the issue.

To me though it seems there are still too many major DAWS in my testing that have an issue with only the IK plugins that I tend to believe it is an IK issue since the older TrackS 5 plugins never had the issue, so something changed.

Moral of the story, on a windows machine, if the IK plugins crash the Daw, it's time to reboot, and closing all active plugin windows will make the ghost pop out preset window disappear.
