Sampletank 4 Max install to different drive

Postby dales69 » Sun Feb 09, 2025 8:18 pm

I have a bunch of Sampletank 3 and 4 products on my C: drive where I'm running out of room. I bought a new SSD and Sampletank 4 Max, and I would like to put Max on, what is now, E: drive. Do I unauthorize everything on in Product Manager first? The only option I'm getting with Max is "update". I'd like to tell it where to install. Help!

Give up trying to get the product manager, Sampletank, Syntronik, etc. to work together and behave themselves on this. Simplest answer is to put a symlink in place in the default location, and point it to the new drive. Move everything, and just let the products think everything is stock.

Just as a followup, here's how to do it.

Make sure all products are closed - ST, Product Manager, etc.

Assumptions:
- Current install path is "C:\Users\Public\Documents\IK Multimedia"
- Destination will be "E:\IK Multimedia"

1. Copy the entire folder to the destination.
2. Rename the original folder to : "C:\Users\Public\Documents\IK Multimedia OLD"
3. Enter a command prompt AS administrator
4. Enter the following:
---
C:\Windows\System32> cd "\Users\Public\Documents"

c:\Users\Public\Documents>mklink /D "IK Multimedia" "e:\IK Multimedia"
symbolic link created for IK Multimedia <<===>> e:\IK Multimedia
---

You should now see that the icon for the folder in C: has a little arrow on it, indicating it's a link. When you open it, it should go to the new location.

Restart the product manager, ST, etc.. and confirm everything is unchanged. Now when you run the installs and updates, everything goes to the new location.

You may now delete the "OLD" folder to free up the space.

Thanks for the reply. I will work on that whenever Sampletank 4 Max stops downloading. With slow, rural internet I've been downloading for the past 13 hours and I'm at 12% done. Should be done in a day or two.
Thanks again.

No problem... but check the log file. It's in:

C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\IK Product Manager\logs

The problem is that if it receives a bad zip file - and I kept getting one - it stops working, but doesn't notify the GUI. It just stops and you are not notified.

As far as I know there should not be any need to create any symlinks.

Here in the past, I have moved the entire libraries to a new disk, then run the relevant stand-alone programs and changed the sounds library location in the programs' Preference Settings.

Your mileage may vary. I just spent a few days with the goal of freshly installing it into folders off of the main drive, and ran into so many issues that I gave up. The symlink gave me the answer I needed with zero config.

Not new to IKM or the product line... I've been licensed back so long I can't remember. 18 years? :)

Thanks for the replies, now I have 2 different ways to go about this. It's apparently going to take a while before I'm ready - been downloading since 5 am yesterday, it's now 5 pm today and I'm a little over 25%. I'm hoping the download will be done by band practice Thursday evening so I can try setting this up Friday.

Thanks to everyone that replied. I ended up installing everything except the sound libraries on C/:, and put the sound libraries on D/: and it works fine.
With all the dropouts while downloading it took over a week before I finally got frustrated and stopped for a while. I finished up over at my buddies house that has high speed internet, and I'm finally done.
Everything works fine, sorry it took so long before I could finalize what I had to do. Again, thanks to everyone for all the suggestions.
