Converting Pro Tools sessions from Philharmonik 1 to 2 CE

Postby rwaldron » Mon Jun 03, 2019 4:18 pm

I’ve several Pro Tools sessions (Mac) with tracks that use Philharmonik 1 - mostly using AMV instruments.

Philharmonik 1 is no longer compatible with Pro Tools, so I’ve bought Philharmonik 2 CE. I hoped I would just be able to use the Ph1 instruments that are included with Ph2 CE, but the list of instruments is very different.

I’ve tried changing CC1 to CC 12 in the Pro Tools tracks to control the volume swell.
This works, but it going to take some time to get the tracks sounding similar to the originals.

What is the easiest way to convert Pro Tools sessions from Ph1 to Ph2 CE?
1. Ph2 CE has Imported Instruments/Imported Samples folders. Is it possible to import Ph1 instruments?

2. Would SampleTank 4 SE make the process easier?

Thanks for your help.

I do not think that MP2 can import other instruments; but check the User Manual.

You might try this:
-- download and install ST3 Custom Shop,
-- it will load / play the MP2 instruments,
-- use ST3 to Import the MP1 instruments into the ST3 Sounds Library,
-- now you can use any of the MP1 or MP2 instruments in ST3.

ST4 does not Import Instruments directly. But you can add the ST3 Sounds library path to ST4's Preference Settings and any instruments Imported into ST3 will then be available in ST4.

DarkStar is correct - MP2 will not import MP1 files.

Going the ST3 (and then possibly ST4) route as suggested is your best option.

DarkStar and garfy - Thanks very much for your help.

I used ST3 Custom Shop to get the Philharmonik 1 instruments working in Pro Tools.

I think I'll still need to modify some tracks that contain old AMV instruments.
I wish Philharmonik 2 had backward compatibility with AMV instruments, but perhaps it's not technically possible.

Thanks again.

MP1 Sounds Manual wrote:AMV Aftertouch/Modwheel/Velocity, these are deluxe child presets
designed to be the most responsive to these three controllers.

Modwheel controls the volume swell with the full playing level
being when the modwheel is all the way up. Aftertouch is set to
“Push” the volume and brightness of the sound according to the
pressure of your fingers on the keyboard (if your midi keyboard
has “aftertouch” capability) and finally the velocity is set to vary
the speed of the attack (VSpeed) as well as the start point of the
sample (VStart) to allow for more animation of the expressiveness
of the instrument or ensemble.

Do they work as expected in ST3 CS?

Thanks for your reply.

Violin 1 AMV
Modwheel and Aftertouch don't seem to do anything to AMV instruments, as far as I can tell. Velocity just seems to control volume.

Macro controls - If I manually rotate them in the ST3 CS window, only the Swell button does anything with Violin 1 or Violin 1 AMV.

I think that that would be worth raising with Technical Support so that they can investigate and comment.
