Sampletank 4CS, Ableton Live 11 and Neil Peart Drums

Postby USGKStudio1 » Thu Apr 17, 2025 4:13 pm

I'm using Ableton Live 11 and trying to figure out how to get the Instruments/Grooves/Loops from the Neil Peart drums to flow through Sampletank and into my DAW as Midi Data that I can add/edit.

I have ModoDrum and those loops are all drag and drop into a MidiTrack as MidiData that I can easily add/edit.
I mistakenly purchased Neil Peart, Billy Cobham and Hugh Pagdam drums thinking these would work in/like ModoDrum where the loops are drag n drop...they're not and I've tried all kinds of things to get Midi Data out of SampleTank CS into the Ableton Live 11 Midi Track with no success.

Does anyone have an answer to being able to have Midi data in a Midi track that I can edit in Ableton Live 11?
I can play the keyboard on the screen and hear sound but the Midi data will not flow onto the track.

If anyone has a screenshot of their setup/settings in Ableton Live, that would be awesome.

I do think IK should have some videos for setting up Sampletank and using Neil Peart or any of the other drum plug-ins for the common DAWs...this is not intuitive.

Not sure why these drums used a total different program to run them and instead just used the architecture of MotoDrum and keep it simple with drag n drop...so complicated and why?

Thanks to anyone that might know.

You're not alone tho—this is a very common frustration with IK Multimedia’s SampleTank drum expansions like Neil Peart Drums. Unlike MODO Drum, which is built from the ground up for virtual drum sequencing with drag-and-drop MIDI, the Neil Peart and Billy Cobham kits are SampleTank instruments, which behave more like general-purpose samplers rather than groove players. Unfortunately, they do not come with MIDI groove libraries in the same way that MODO Drum does.

That said, you can sequence and edit MIDI for these kits manually in Ableton Live, but the process is more hands-on.

I use SampleTank Cobham and Padgham all the time in FL Studio. They are drag and drop. Just load them up in the ST drum editor, then place mouse over the C1 note e.t.c. and drag into MIDI spot in DAW.

Modo Drum was made much later than SampleTank, So totally different product. Thats why they are not same.

what the previous poster meant was that the audio loops of the eifferent drum packs for sampletank can be loaded onto a key(c1,c#1,d1,etc) then you can use the midi keyboard to play the loops in sequence by hitting the keys. If you are looking for a way to get midi data from the audio loops played, that is not possible with just sampletank
