SampleTank Neil Peart Drum Mapping

Postby jreed2 » Thu Jan 26, 2023 7:23 pm

I have recently purchased the Neil Peart Drums for SampleTank. Does anyone have info on how the individual kit pieces are mapped to the keyboard notes? Selecting the individual types of pieces sometimes gives a hint as to what notes are used: for example the Ride cymbals are mapped to D#2, F2, B2. But not all of the pieces have this information.

The documentation says that "All of the drums are mapped using an extended General MIDI mapping... " but the the iMap and extended iMap Drum Layout mappings don't seem to match the SampleTank NP mappings (e.g., the NP SampleTank Rides are mapped to D#2, F2 and B2, but these correspond to Snare Rimshot/Other, Hihat Foot Shut and HiHat open in the Extended iMap Drum Layout).

I found a User manual for "Sonic Reality’s Neil Peart Drums Vol. 1: The Kit, an Infinite Player library for Kontakt!" which has a list of ALL of the kit pieces. It states "The sampled Neil Peart DW kit exceeds the size of all previous mapping conventions, so we have created an expanded map containing all of the kit pieces. It is essentially the iMap, extended in both directions." Sadly the mapping does not appear to correspond to the SampleTank mapping.

Is there a user manual for NP SampleTank? Am I missing something fundamental here (I am a guitarist - not a drummer). Has anyone created the appropriate map?

Thanks very much

I'm encountering the same problem with several of the drum packs for Sampletank 4, in that there seems to be zero information about which key-press corresponds to which drum. Posts from several years ago suggest that packs like the Neil Peart Drums or Billy Cobham Drums use the iMap mapping, but that doesn't seem to fit - certainly not for the Billy Cobham drums. Has anyone ever managed to find a midi map for the various Sampletank drumkits?

If those old topics did not help, then you could try contacting Support at Sonic Reality (an IK Multimedia partner)

Many thanks for the reply! It could be that I am missing something obvious, but none of the iMap mappings mentioned in those posts seemed to fit - anyway, following your advice I've filed a support ticket with eSoundz/SonicReality (as well as IK Multimedia) so I will report back if I hear anything...

I eventually got a short response from either IK or Sonic Reality saying that there was no information available on the mapping

I heard back from Sonic Reality, and just as DarkStar said, the support manager Allen was very helpful. However, he did not know what the mapping was. Sonic Reality provided the samples, and someone at IK Multimedia made the actual library, and apparently that person has now left.

I also had an initial response from IK Multimedia, which was basically "google the General Midi specification". That's fair enough in one sense, in that notes 35-81 do follow the General Midi specification, but it's all the extra notes that I would like to get information for (e.g. notes 24-34 [or C0 to A#0] or 82/B4+). I said that to IK Multimedia in my reply, so I'll report back if I get any more information, but given what you say, there might not be any more information to have...

There may be a hard way to find the required information ;)

I have just had a look at the ModoM Snare Set 1.pak from Syntronik. The start of the file listed several file names. It looks like they use the ST4 Editor naming convention. Below is the contents. I have formatted the contents to make it easier to read.

Code: Select all

So ...
-- cross-stick is on C#1 ( velocity 1-127, with 9 round-robins)
-- Clap 2 is on D#1 ( velocity 1-127, with 4 round-robins)
-- Snare 3 is on D1 ( velocity 1-127, with 17 round-robins)
-- Snare 2 is on C#1 ( velocity 1-127, with 17 round-robins),
The note names follow the Yamaha standard - middle C (#60) = C3.

This approach may work on the NP Drums. Good luck :)

Thanks for this Darkstar. I had not thought of looking at the .pak files - that's a great idea! I've just had a quick look now and although the file names are not very descriptive (e.g. all the Snares are just Snares-notename-velocity-roundrobin with no indication whether it's a) it's a start. I won't have time to investigate further for the next couple of days but will report back early next week.

Just wanted to chime in and add, it would be helpful and handy if IK Support were to post a KB article on the support site on how SampleTank drums are mapped. I also find myself having to guess and experiment.
