ST4 Pitch Bend Range - Can we go to 24 like in ST3?

Postby shawnbulen » Fri Aug 02, 2024 12:04 am

Hello -

Looks like ST4 has a max pitch bend range of 12. Any way to increase that to 24? Like it was in ST3?

I recently upgraded to ST4 and was kinda surprised to see this limitation. A PBR of 24 is much more practical for those of us who use guitars as our MIDI controllers. Wheel events are used for all instances where you're not plucking a new note, including legato (hammeron/pulloff), slide, & whammy bar. It's not just for note bends. So, for example, a PBR of 12 messes things up when you slide more than 12 frets...

ST3 presets allow a 24 semitone range.

ST4 presets allow a 12 semitone range.

So that means if you want a sound that allows a 24 semitone range, you have to select an ST3 preset.

You can tell if a preset is ST3, by editing it, and checking for the “ST3 Legacy” logo in the Elements section. If you don’t see the “ST3 Legacy” logo, then the preset is an ST4 preset.

Thanks, I understood all that.

I was wondering if there were a way to override this, to allow 24 in ST4.

I hate the Kontakt UI, have always preferred the ST UI as it is more flexible & intuitive to me, but they do have a well-hidden 2nd screen where you can add an additional 12 semitones of bend range... I was hoping to hear there was such a hidden setting for ST4 samples...

This severely limits using guitar synth on ST4 samples, IMO.

I think they need to restore 24 in a future release.

Pretty sure there isn't a way to override the range.

I can see where this would be useful for things like pedal steels (which is an ST4 patch in Sampletank)

One workaround it to use Legato and change the portamento speed. Though, not ideal as you don’t have any control over the contour of the curve.

Another workaround is to set the range to 12. Issue a bend = -8192 to start a note at the minimum to bend up. If you want to bend down 24 semi tone, Issue a bend = 8191. You effectively have -12 to 12 range which allows a 24 semi tone range.

Of course I can make 12 work - if I reprogram all my other guitar synth gear...

And limit legato, whammy, slide, etc.

But I shouldn't have to do that.

ST4 can do it. In fact, early versions of ST4 did exactly that, but incorrectly labeled it as 1/2 the value. So it said 12, but was in fact 24.

The fix was to make the bend match the knob labels. They should have gone the other way & made the labels match the actual bend.

That "fix" was a significant step backwards.

Is there a protocol to communicate this to the devs?
