Hi,

New to this whole ethos of Amp Modelling etc…

I have a couple of questions, I’m hoping some nice person will help me with:

1. The stand alone Tonex App just isn’t showing any activity - no input, and no output. I’ve tried uninstalling, re-installing, updating and then re-installing. I’ve tried to use my “normal” I/O device on every possible channel. I’ve tried the Tonex pedal as I/O device. I’ve tried creating an aggregate device with both Tonex and my Fender Quantum, and again, tried every conceivable channel. All with the same nothing happening result. Contrast that with fantastic operation within my DAW, and also no problem within Amplitube. Any ideas please?
2. Talking of Amplitube - it reports that Tonex needs to be installed to access Tonex within Amplitube…again, I’ve uninstalled both Tonex and Amplitube, but this time installed Tonex first, then Amplitube. Same result, Tonex is reported as not operational within Amplitube, but Amplitube itself works brilliantly
3. I’ve noticed that an awful lot of the user created Tones in Tone Net, are not available to me, because I only have Tonex Max and Amplitube 5, and I’m getting the white noise alert and a dinky little lock symbol on parts of the fx chain…I understand this. My question is, if I purchase the full version of Total Studio 5 Max, which seems to include a fair few of the add on packs for Amplitube and Tonex, am I going to be able to access many more of the uploaded user tones?

Hey,

Figured I’d jump in and put something down although I likely need someone else to chime in on the later points. Based on what you’ve said my guess is you just picked up a Tonex Pedal (Tonex Max and Amplitube 5 is the package there). So I’m going to frame things around that. If that’s wrong I might be way off. Also I’m going to assume you’re on 2.1 since you just posted this.

1. Inputs and outputs - The new version of tonex (2.X) changed where things are on the screen and they kind of hid the input screen on us. You need to click the “IK” in the top left to get the audio settings and preferences screen:

 ![image](https://canada1.discourse-cdn.com/flex034/uploads/ikmultimedia/original/1X/009335b4acbf749836af23ebe00512baca3489f8.jpeg)

That menu should look the same as Amplitube and should get you moving.

On Tonex pedal to use it you need to download the ASIO driver from the product manager under “Hardware” then click on your pedal and “Drivers/Firmware”. After that the pedal needs to be in “Interface mode”. Hold the “Model” Button in the top left. Then spin it to select “Global Setup” then down to “General” then down to “Operation Mode” then switch it to “Interface”. Click the “Model” button each time to move down the menus. The “preset” button can be pushed in to go back. If you leave the pedal in “Interface” it will probably do nothing or sound awful if you try to plug it into an amp later so remember to leave it where you want it. The pedal has 2 inputs. Input 1 has your tone model on your pedal playing with it. Input 2 is your dry signal.

Last just making sure you’re in the right spot. Tonex is actually 3 programs; Tonex (or tonex player), Tonex Editor, and Tonex Modeler. Tonex Modeler is just for building your own tone models. Tonex Editor is ONLY for loading things onto your tonex pedal and controlling the pedal itself. No audio moves through the software in Tonex Editor. But if the outputs are plugged into headphones or a cab the changes should happen right away. If you want to try tone models then you need Tonex (player).

1. Tonex in amplitube - Sorry but I’m unsure about this one. It should be as easy as hitting the “tonex” button. I’m not going to guess on this one but I will say that in Amplitube the tonex menu still looks like V1. Anyone confirm a fresh V2 only will launch in Amplitube 5?

2. I’m again going to make assumptions here and assume you’re brand new. So there are a few places to get tones in tonex. And with V2 they’re separated into 3 types “Presets”, “Tone Model Amp”, and “Tone Model Stomp”. If you click on the top middle text (It will say “TONEX Default”) you can then get to the Preset Browser. Below the amp in the middle you will see “Tone Model” and the name of the model (default is the “Black Angus”). Click that and you’ll have an option for the amp model and stomp model browsers. These 3 essentially do the same thing but are setup to deal with the different types of models. The difference between models are presets is that presets will save essentially all of your settings on the amp model and all the different pedals so you can play them back later. The tone model browser will just stuff the tone model into the amp block you’re playing.

- Factory tones - these came loaded in from IK. Lots of them.
- Collections - These are premium or additional sets of models. With Tonex MAX you got a lot of these collections and they should already be loaded. But there are a lot of collections that are premium and cost a fair amount to add so choose wisely if you’re going that way. You can try these but with the hiss and the lock symbol. (If you click try it will give you some time without that to actually give it a go)
- “Partner Collections” - These are models made by creators that then sell on the tonex. There are a lot of people making models for sale if you’re looking for something specific. Again you can try these with the hiss and the lock symbol.
- FREE Models. So this is where ToneNet comes in. If you open the Preset, amp or stomp browser and go to “Discover Presets” you can search for all of the free models on there. There is a ton and generally they have almost anything. If you’re just starting out I’d take a look there before looking for a premium model. Right now V2 isn’t displaying the Amp name right now which I assume IK will fix shortly. You should be able to click the model and it will load up and try it out. These are free so no hiss and no lock symbol will apply. Again there’s a ton there from a lot of people. Start here.
- Outside of tonenet. A lot of people make tone models and sell them on their websites. Often teasers are on Tonenet to try. Some are in Partner collections but some are only there. I like Amalgam and Tone Junkie if you’re looking for a place to start.

3 continued. So just to answer two questions. If you buy Total Studio Max you will get Amplitube 5 Max and (I believe) should unlock the additional effects in Amplitube which show the lock symbol. (I need verification on that because I only run Amplitube not max). Total studio will not unlock all of the premium collections and partner collections but you do get some. IK has a listing of all the things here: [Total Studio 5 MAX, the ultimate collection of authentic sounds and gear](https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/ts5/?p=versions#compare)

Until you’ve had a look through tonenet and played with Amplitube a bit I wouldn’t bite on Total Studio.

Hope this long rambling response helped.

Hi Cronowyn,

Cheers very much for that detailed run through. As you have surmised, I am indeed a new recruit. I should have probably mentioned that I’m a Mac user also, so, I think that the ASIO stuff is only applicable to Windows?? I will check my facts on that though.

Ok, so I was talking about Tonex the app, not the other two, which I’ve not really looked at as yet. I have taken a screen shot of my audio settings for both Tonex and Amplitube and they are the same parameters, but whilst I can get sound from Amplitube, Tonex, just refuses to acknowledge my existence 🙂

The other information/pointers are extremely useful, so thanks loads for taking the time to type it all out. I’ll be reading it and using it as a starting point for my journey.

If you do have any other ideas as to why my Tonex app isn’t playing ball, I’d be very grateful to hear them…I did read that Tonex 2.1 seems to be a problem when being used inside of Amplitube, and that it was fine when using the previous beta versions, and indeed version 1 of Tonex. The Product Manager seems to be the preferred way of installation, but I just wonder if it is possible to remove Tonex 2.1, and then somehow get an older version and install manually (bypassing the Product Manager??)

Cheers for now,

Dolly

Ah, I think I’ve just made a discovery…what I’ve been calling Tonex 2.1, is that actually called Tonex Player 2.1?

Also, although the advertisement seems to suggest that Tonex 2.1 Player is the “heart of the eco system”, I’m thinking that as a Tonex pedal purchaser, that I only get access if I pay another $149. Do you have the pedal or board as hardware?

Your screen shot has different configurations - Tonex has line 1 as the only input and Amplitube has line 1 on the left and line 2 on the right. Are you moving your guitar between the two inputs? If you are plugged into line 2 on this configuration, you’d get audio from Amplitube and not Tonex.

You should not need to pay anything more, Pedal includes the Tonex license.

Hi, thanks for the reply…no, I’m not moving the guitar input - it’s consistently on line 1, so in my understanding that should mean if sound appears in Amplitube, it should also appear in Tonex Player…

Yes, both should get signal in this scenario. Though, the way it’s listed and with an instrument plugged into line 1, you should only be getting the left channel on Amplitube. I have both left and right input channels set to line 1 in Ampltube when only a single instrument is plugged in to line 1. Also, a side note - your buffer is really high, I would expect a lot of latency at 512. I don’t know why they make 512 the default.
