Any hints about 2.0.3?

I spent almost 3 hours the other day trying to replace that preset. I don’t think there is anything that you can do. It had me and Gemini (AI) totally baffled. We tried everything that we could think of. Hell, I would be just happy to have tonex restart where I shut it off the last session. There is absolutely no reason not to be able to set a custom default preset!

I have the same issue. Other collections and the previous 1.x presets and models are available except the 2.0 specific, free, SE models. Have sent a message to Support. Let’s see.

Hi,

It’s great to see IK Multimedia is continuing Tonex active development, and the release of v2 is certainly great.

However, I’m struggling to see how the new version improves the workflow. In practice, it requires more clicks and more screen navigation to accomplish tasks that were simpler and faster in v1. As others have already mentioned, this becomes especially tedious when holding a guitar — the workflow slows down significantly, particularly when browsing and navigating Tone Models / Presets.

For example: I have a large library of Tone Models, and if I want to find a specific Amalgam model, I need to open the Preset/Tone Model browser, locate the Amalgam folder, search (assuming I remember the abbreviation/name), click, and select. But if I want to quickly audition a slightly gainier variation of the same model, I no longer have the list in front of me. I either have to click the tiny arrows on the main screen, trying to stumble across (God forbid using the menus there) or reopen the browser entirely. That’s a lot of unnecessary navigation — especially considering the main screen is mostly empty, occupied by a few images.

A few additional issues (v2.0.2):

- Sorting by “Newest / Oldest” doesn’t seem to work in either the Preset or Tone Model browsers.

- I don’t see any way to filter only v2 vs. v1 models (that’s maybe only me, though 🙂 - I’m sure it should be somewhere)

- It would be very useful to be able to add columns to the browsers — author, amp, date added, etc.

- Sorting by clicking column headers (ascending/descending) would greatly improve navigation. Even better would be double‑click grouping by column content — these are fairly standard features.

- Adjustable text size/scaling would help a lot, given the variety of screen sizes in the wild. One fixed size doesn’t work well for everyone.

- Tooltips/hints for controls would improve usability

- On Refresh Library, after my Tonex 1 library got converted and I added 30-40 new presets, all the converted presets/models were gone and I was back to the factory library. Good that the conversion preserves the source, but hardly an expected outcome, I would say 🙂

Overall, Tonex v2 looks nice, but the workflow feels slower and more cumbersome than before. Improving navigation and reducing click‑depth would make a big difference.

Looking forward to an even improved version, making navigation easier and faster and thank you in advance 🙂

Perfectly summed up – great!

Having to constantly open the model browser to select a different sound within the same package is impractical.

You should be able to click on the active profile in the main window and select a different sound from the same package.

The Neural Amp Player, now Gateway Player, has had this important function since its inception.

**Bug Report:** “Date Added” from the v1 database gets overwritten with the current date when converting over to v2.

**Expected Result:** The “Date Added” for a Tone Model or preset, should be imported from the v1 Library unchanged. Right now, all of my presets look like they were added today making it hard to differentiate newer content versus older.

Examples: is this Vox Top Boost preset from the Amalgam set I just bought today, or an older one? Can’t tell! Is this from my first Vibrolux Reverb set of captures, or is this from the V2 set I did? Can’t tell!

Another bug. Hope I post the right place now. This forum is a bit confusing.

I had a session in Fender Studio Pro that would not open. Older versions would open, but if I saved them, they too got the problem. I spent hours figuring out why. With the aid of ChatGPT I found out Tonex plugin 2.02 was the cultprit. Here is what ChatGPT summarizes:

Studio Pro 8.1.2 / macOS 26.5.2: session containing TONEX 2.0.2 can become unloadable after saving. During loading, Studio Pro appears to stall on apparently unrelated third-party plug-ins. Activity Monitor Sample Process shows the main thread blocked inside TONEX. Removing TONEX makes the session load normally and the subsequently saved session remains loadable.

I installed TONEX 2.0.2 beta and all I get on opening the Standalone app is a blank window that displays “Not Responding” after a few minutes.
Windows 11 i910900K

**UPDATE**
VST3 is working for me in Studio Pro and Reaper.
One more DAW to check.
So far so good in that respect.

**Question**
Will the FX Chain be editable at some point ?
I’m not being allowed to move FX positions and the FX browser only appears as an option for the Amplifier slot.

I am not gonna lie, this beta has been pretty frustrating. I love TONEX, but I had well over 100 3rd party presets all sorted, and initially the beta got rid of all those presets. In the latest version I can get them to load, but all the folders are gone, even though in the backup folder I can see the file that manages the folder structure and what’s in each. I tried putting some in folders, but if I ever need to refresh the library, it deletes all those folders again. Instead of dragging and dropping the presets into folders, I tried using the save dialog to change the folder they are in, and when I opened TONEX the next time, those folders are empty again.

I am in software, so I get that stuff happens with new releases, but this has been frustrating enough to have me opening other software instead of dealing with it, not to mention the repeated wiping of my folders. Not trying to complain too much, just being honest.

IK, and to some degree, end-users, need to keep in mind that capture players are inherently different than modelers because there’s a massive file management component that modelers typically don’t need to deal with. You literally need a good file browser/database, because users will be managing hundreds or thousands of tones, and finding the right sound is going to be a huge part of the overall experience.

The original ToneX UI was too busy trying to do too much. It was ergonomic on the one hand, but cluttered.

The new ToneX UI dials back a lot of that clutter, but has created large regressions in the file management/database experience. I hope they can strike the right balance and take the user feedback they’re receiving seriously, which I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on for now.

I switched to 2.0 beta player recently. I followed the instructions on backing up my presets and so far have had no issues. I really like the clean new display!! It’s much less cluttered, though the drop down menu will take a little getting use to instead of having my presets on the bottm of the screen, but I can adapt. TONEX just keeps getting better!! Thanks IK!

Congrats on the release. I know there’s plenty of happy users with a more aesthetically pleasing GUI but, personally, this feels so much more convoluted, menu-dive heavy, and less laptop-friendly with multiple large windows to manage. Not sure if the preview sound feature is gone entirely or just not yet added, but that is also frustrating for organizing your library without your guitar. Happy 2.0.2 restored my user folders but otherwise prefer the layout of Tonex 1. You could literally give me MS-DOS or Terminal windows over updated graphics if the organization process is simple lol. I’m on a 16" Macbook and have trouble relating to the people who aren’t bothered by multiple windows to manage. Add in a DAW, other fx, etc and the last thing I want is more clutter. Tbh, all I really wanted for a 2.0 was to get rid of downsampling to 44.1 and batch editing for my library. 2.0 seems like a lot of work to put in for things that were mostly fine. Just wanted to offer my actual thoughts, but my intention isn’t to diminish the hard work of the devs. Hopefully the beta feedback helps the process of getting this to a release candidate 🫡

I warned about the Library Refresh in my previous post, as it happened to me too.

[mod redacted - follow the forum rules, please]

I’m only testing the beta version on my second PC.

The important thing is the Library file (Data Base file) that Tonex 1 creates in the Documents folder.

If you back this up externally, you can restore the folder structure in Tonex 1.

Cheers

You’re a Tonex guru, so I certainly have not spent as much time in the app as you, and I’m really not trying to challenge your opinion haha. I’m more of a library organizer/pick my tone and record type of user. You don’t think all the windows and menus feel cluttered? Library management aside (def better in v1), there was something less bothersome (imo) about a 1-window system. I really don’t like going from the Tone Model browser or Preset browser back to the main window and diving through menus or pop-up windows over and over. I feel like v1 was one-hand navigation and v2 feels like “let me put my guitar on the stand for a minute while I tinker” 😂

As already mentioned, Tonex writes the folder structure to the Library file, while the presets and tone models are in the backup folder.

If you want to restore your old system, install Tonex version 1.12.1 and restore all the backed-up files to their original location.

If you didn’t back up the Library file and it no longer appears in the Tonex folder (in Documents), I’m out of ideas.

The Beta Tonex 2 writes a Library2 file, which is how you can distinguish between them.
